Emily Captures Bush Botanicals in her Playful Acrylic Still Lifes
From her home in the Macedon Ranges Emily paints her surroundings as well as bouquets collected from her daily wanderings around her property and the region, in her signature lively and playful style.
Emily has been a working artist producing bodies of work, running successful Artists in Residence programs and teaching art to adults and teenagers keen to improve their techniques since graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2003.
Emily is known for her fluid, energetic lines and playful colour combinations in her paintings depicting radiant celebrations of Australian bush botanicals. Full of warm tones and often grounded with a pink base, Emily’s paintings show the beauty and bounty of the region in a rosy light indeed.
Emily has always been fascinated by the bush and her artistic focus on native flora and her relationship to the wild landscape was crystallised after her tree-change from Melbourne.
Before moving to the Macedon Ranges with her young family Emily Co-Founded and ran the Artists' Guild - an innovative gallery and art hub; that provided peer support for women artists to create, connect and collaborate. Where she supported women in their individual creative journeys through co-creating sessions, provocations, artistic circles, critiques, conversations, showings, group exhibitions and workshops in Docklands, Melbourne.
Emily is a passionate educator, and advocate for artists, and emphasises and encourages individual expression in all its forms by her students.

After a delicious locally sourced organic lunch and a coffee to lift you up, Emily will continue to guide you through mixing mid-tones and reinforce using warm and cool colours to define shapes and draw the eye through your painting. As beginners, Emily knows you will make mistakes and will show you the tricks to make your mistakes disappear without throwing out hours of work! For more experienced painters she can tailor the tuition to what you need to further your practice.
Finally, you will be shown how to make complex shapes like petals look realistic with expressive forms, how to add highlights without desaturation, define the foreground of your painting and create directional lines and open shapes to avoid the cartoonish look.
Throughout the day you will have plenty of time for working on your painting with lots of feedback and assistance from Emily in this intimate class of no more than 10 students. Everyone will be able to complete their paintings ready to hang on their walls with pride by the end of the day. You will leave with all the knowledge and skills to replicate it at home and grow your skills as a painter with the fundamentals of Botanical Still Life under your belt!
So what can you expect?
Emily will guide you through the process of painting your very own Seasonal Botanical Still Life in this all-day workshop. You will be given your own art kit at the start of the day which you will take home with your finished piece along with the skills and knowledge to continue your painting journey. You will start the day learning how to prime your painting surface and the importance of the base colour you choose, you will learn about basic composition and sketching techniques, and produce some sketches of draft compositions and discuss them as a class and individually.
Emily will introduce the class to colour theory and how to use contrasting and complimentary colours to make the colours work together and not be jarring, fake looking or simply turn to mud! As you sketch your design onto the board you will also look at how to break down the complex shapes into manageable forms and how to use shadows and negative space to make your painting look more realistic.
