This introduction to bookbinding workshop is the perfect way to dip your toe in the world of making books. The Pamphlet Stitch an often overlooked bookbinding technique due to it’s apparent simplicity, but in this workshop Rhain will show you how it is in fact the powerhouse of bookbinding, and the most versatile bookbinding technique there is!
Rhain will start off by walking you through the fundamentals of bookbinding, before you dive straight into making a single signature booklet. While you are all working, Rhain will continue the discussion about bookbinding techniques, covering common terminology, different techniques that can be incorporated from the bookbinding world as well as those that can be borrowed from other artistic fields, and blended in to make incredible booklets that are perfect for making jotting pads, artbooks, Zines, journals and more.
After a delicious lunch Rhain will guide you through how to make a multi-signature leather journal using the the same fundamental techniques from the morning session. You will be given a set of tools that you will learn to use through out the day and then take home, along with your completed leather journal, booklet and instruction sheet, so you can continue making books at home!
By the end of the day you will understand common terms such as folios and signatures, understand the importance of knowing the gsm and grain of paper, the types of threads you can use and any pretreatment that they might require to make them suitable for use in bookbinding as well as different types of treatments that can be applied to the book edges.
You will also have a clear idea of the different options for stitching, folding, cutting, piercing and knotting to achieve different effects and some adaptions to try out at home.

”Our teacher was excellent - she was very patient, supportive and enthusiastic about her craft. We made a simple book to start and then a leather covered book. The workshop was in a great art store, you got to keep the tools and lunch was provided. Well worth it.”

“As always I felt welcomed and nourished by the Rhain and the staff. The activity, learning to hand bind a book, was enjoyable, a little challenging (that leather was tough) but the class was designed to ensure we all succeed. I would recommend this, indeed any class taken by Rhain, she is a quality and caring instructor who clearly loves sharing her skills with others. THANK YOU”
