Buttlejorrk Artist Collective’s 49th Annual Exhibition celebrates the festive season with colour, craftsmanship, and creativity. Bringing together a vibrant mix of painting, sculpture, pottery, jewellery, textiles, woodwork, and more this exhibition is all handcrafted by talented local Macedon Ranges artists. 

This year, the exhibition welcomes special guests from the Macedon Ranges Potters, adding an exciting new dimension to the show.

A joint exhibition by local printmaker Malini Lewis and watercolour artist Sally Berridge, each exploring the connection between water, nature and man. 

Sally used the common mythology of the Hare, as being representative of the Moon Deities to show the rebirth, rejuvenation, resurrection and intuition, as an intermediary between lunar deities and humans. While in Malini’s works she used Vedic texts, impermanence, merging and ephemeral beauty, underpinned by an alchemical approach to materials and process, in the colour of blue, to interweave and layer to create intriguing and thought provoking pieces to explore.

Melbourne & Victorian Artists Inc presents a group exhibition of their members work exploring what is beyond the city limits, in a variety of mediums including; oils, acrylics, pencil, pastel, sculpture and mixed media.

Celebrating its 53rd year, The Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival Art Prize has over 160 entries over 6 categories as well as the Overall Daffodil Prize bringing the Prize Pool to $2.5k.

Our annual celebration of traditional printmaking returns to capture the carving, inking, and pressing that goes into editioning printmaking works. A collection of traditional printmaking are showcased including; lino and woodcut, monoprinting, etching, and screenprinting.

Peter has curated a diverse range of characters from various creative and intellectual pursuits, and overlayed them with one of their quotes. 

In the absence of traditional word spacing, Peter has transformed the letters to into a patterned conundrum, testing the viewer’s perception. It is this challenging of his audience that underpins all of  his works and is his philosophy in both art and life.

The quotes themselves convey wit, wisdom, or at least whimsical charm, providing an insight into each character’s personality, whilst resonating with Peter’s own sense of humour & irony.

Wenona Matthews explores stories of place, people and myth through her artworks in her solo exhibition Vision Rising. Investigating and exploring the things unseen, unheard or forgotten by the world she hopes to bring them into awareness. 

Drawing out the symbology rooted within story and mythology, the essence is distilled to create work that has deep meaning true to their origins. 

Wenona’s artistic practice has a deep connection to place, ecology and people; portraying the interlinked connections between stories the natural environment and the relationship humans hold with cultural stories.

- Living in an authentic and genuine manner, true to your own feelings, beliefs, and experiences with a sense of empowerment, self-acceptance, and living without the constraints of societal norms or expectations.

Queerthentic is an initiative of Macedon Ranges Accessible Arts Inc. creating an environment of inclusion, amplifying the voices of LGBTIQA+ and gender-diverse people and bringing Pride to the Macedon Ranges.

Queerthentic tells the personal histories of regional LGBTIQA+ and gender-diverse artists and shares the influences and impact of queer history and culture on their lives.

Larissa Taylor and Cathy Mackay have used ceramics and painting to explore the connection between the natural world and the memories that shape our sense of place.

Larissa’s ceramics echo the whimsical stories, textures and organic forms of the earth, grounding us in the untamed beauty of nature. 

Cathy’s paintings, vibrant with colour and layered with meaning, capture the emotional landscapes of memory and the spirit of spaces that linger in the heart.

Together, their creations invite viewers to explore the wild terrains of the inner and outer world. Wilderness Within is an exploration of the harmony between nature’s power and the personal stories connecting us to place.

Lost in the Moment is joint exhibition of Elle Pervez & Carolyn Brennan-Tucker, a mother daughter duo, showing that talent can run in families.

Elle grew up between Northern NSW and Remote communities in the NT, leaving her with a special love for the vast and ever-changing landscapes of Australia.

Simularily Carolyn draws from her passion for capturing her surrounds from living in these location but it is the dynamic moment where the light changes that she strives to capture.

6 February - 3 March, 2025

Daniel Butterworth is a local artist, known for his loose non-traditional style of painting. Usually known for portraiture Daniel has taken his works in a different direction for “Stolen”. Travelling Australia Daniel wanted to paint its diversity. Using his patented style of house paint on cardboard he has captured the scenery of his travels. Along the way, amongst the landscapes, are trashed burnt-out vehicles, which modernised the scene.

Wanting to acknowledge the Indigenous peoples while painting their land, the show and artworks are titled “Stolen” with a self-portrait of the artist titled “The Thief”, leaving it up to the viewer to decide if it is the land or the vehicles that have been stolen.

Escaping on adventures overseas, interstate, or even just a region completely different to our own can be as simple as capturing the experience in art - sweeping hills, crashing waves, or calming sunsets capture your favourite landscapes for all to immerse themselves in.

Just in time for Christmas Shopping the Buttlejorrk and Macedon Ranges Potters have joined together to create an amazing array of ceramics and art to tick off everyone on your Christmas list, and even the serving ware for your gatherings!

Buttlejorrk’s 48th Annual Exhibition with guest artists Macedon Ranges Potters includes many forms of artworks as well as the ceramics both groups are renowned for, including painting, textiles, woodwork, sculpture and works on paper. 

Each artist has their own unique background giving a different dimension to their pieces and they are always a fantastic mix of both traditional and contemporary works. 

The Buttlejorrk exhibition is on display in the Main Gallery until Christmas Eve at 4pm, but they often sell out, so you better be quick!

Pamela Gleeson and Nadia Kliendanze use the mediums of acrylic and oil paintings, as well as original prints, to take you on an visual odyssey through the landscapes of the Victorian Central Highlands, and capture the profound beauty and untamed spirit of this unique Australian terrain.

Both artists deeply rooted in the heart of the Central Highlands, a region known for its diverse and ever-changing landscapes.  From the rugged majesty of the Macedon Ranges to the tranquil beauty of Hepburn Springs, and from the dense eucalyptus forests to the sprawling farmlands, this region is a constant source of inspiration.

They feel a deep responsibility to not only capture the essence of this land, but also to raise awareness of its fragility and the need for its preservation.  The Central Highlands faces numerous challenges from habitat loss to climate change, and through their art, they hope to inspire a sense of stewardship and appreciation for this precious region.

‘One Step Further’ is a curated selection of artists who push the boundaries of contemporary-themed quilt making. Presented by Victoria Quilters Inc. this juried biennial exhibition of Contemporary Textile Artwork is open to all textile artists in Australia & New Zealand. 

The displayed quilts demonstrate a wide range of techniques, fabrics, and innovative designs with each maker going ‘one step further’  in style, technique and presentation while retaining the essence of a quilt.

Fragility is a series of cyanotype photomontages exploring the intersection between the delicacy of the mind in relation to with memento mori juxtaposed with natural elements and organic shapes to promote calm and enable our brains to create new pathways for ideas to flourish and grow.

Olivia Siddaway is a Melbourne-based artist exploring the intersection between traditional photographic processes and contemporary mixed media techniques. She focuses on subject matter that explores empty spaces, natural textures, anthropomorphic aspects of objects, and the debris of human life. Using historical methods to produce imagery with ultraviolet light on different surfaces, Olivia employs a monochromatic palette to convey complex emotive content.

June 6 - 29 July, 2024

Few things are clear cut in life anymore, but the art of printmaking is even when some of the finished pieces are not. Printmaking requires parts of the image to be cut away, hidden, or revealed to create finished works - each process requiring its own skilled manipulation for the final product. This exhibition is a celebration of all traditional printmaking techniques.

We are so fortunate to have beautiful views surrounding us every day in the Macedon Ranges, if we take the time to stop and actually look. The landscapes swirl and change with time, season and weather, making a seemingly unlimited number of perfect landscapes to capture in any medium. Our featured artists have used a variety of mediums, processes, and colour palettes to capture their own favourite landscapes from the beautiful red centre, to the sweeping hills of the Grampians, and many local vistas to enjoy.

March 14 - April 8, 2024

In Jacklyn’s practice as a full-time working artist for the last three years in Regional Victoria she has developed a recognisable style of still life painting, as she depicts aspects of everyday life; from glasses of wine, vases of flowers, familiar foods and everything in between. 

She carefully navigates the balance between abstraction and representational elements, she chooses to base her works on recognisable objects, but her bold colour palettes and joyful compositions are an embodiment of the emotions and memories we collectively hold with the objects rather than just the object themselves.

Jacklyn has made her creative practice an integral, fundamental part of her daily routine. Working with acrylic paint and oil pastels as a reflective practice, providing a source of constant inspiration as well as drawing inspiration from her current surroundings, and what is happening both within and around her.

She is a firm believer in doing more of what makes you feel good, listening to your gut, and following your intuition in life and art. Whatever your inner voice is saying to follow that, to chase that dream, to go after what you really want, like REALLY want. That is the basis of her art, and what draws you into her pieces.

Buttlejorrk Artist Collective has run continuously since 1976, while originally a group of potters wishing to share knowledge and exhibit in the region, it has now expanded to encompass many crafts and mediums.

In it’s 47th exhibition Buttlejorrk has a range of works including paintings, sculptures, jewellery, textiles, as well as metal and woodwork with many pieces being perfect as a unique locally handmade Christmas gift.

Back again to show off their artistic endeavours are the 2023 VCE art students from Sacred Heart College Kyneton. With a range of mediums, themes, and styles presented in one exhibition, this year’s students show their individuality and interests through their art with themes ranging from the darker side of life as a clown, to exploration of the monarchy, and the environmental impact of pollution, no theme has been left unexplored by the group.

The exhibition is the perfect way to get a snapshot of the issues that impact the lives of young people in this area - captured through their own experiences.

Fran Batrouney, Leslie Edwards and Jann Haggart all approach the intricate craft of Art Quilting in unique ways, bringing their own distinctive style and inspiration to their quilts.

Fran incorporates ethnic fabrics from her travels around the world overlaid with extensive hand stitching that take the viewer on a journey with her on each quilt. While Leslie’s quilts are designed around her hand-dyed fabric, with hand and machine quilting designed to highlight and enhance the dyed materials rather than draw the eye. These are paired with Jann Haggart whose work is deeply rooted in her connection to nature, and is depicted mindfully using mainly upcycyled fabrics and threads.

Together the three artists show that Art Quilting is an ever expanding and thriving artistic medium full of diversity and creativity that is worth exploring.

With over 50 years of experience in painting, Joanne’s artistic practice shows in her abstract multi-media works. Her focus on sculpture and fine arts adds depth to her creations, delving into the interplay of shapes and colours. Through her paintings, Joanne portrays the transformation of our planet - from the lush richness of oceans to the contrasting, drier conglomeration of bustling cities.

Emma Fitzgibbon's artistic vision is distinct as she delves into the effects of light and superimposed scenes through analogue techniques. Utilising 35mm film, dark room prints, and collage, she crafts compelling visual narratives. At the heart of her exploration lies the theme of memory and its gradual dissolution. Emma's has a Fine Arts degree from VCA in 2022

May 25 - June 19, 2023

After dabbling in ceramics Dani Legge started her artistic career as a sculptor, working in wax capturing the minutia of her forms to be captured in the bronze and highlighted after her husband cast it. After a decade of this detailed work, Dani changed mediums to ballet outfits, after needing to make one for her eldest daughter, and it became a 25 year career! Dani mainly made stretched fabric tutus and created these intricate works of art for many ballerinas around Australia, as well as teaching workshops so others could learn her technique and still sells the occasional one she makes for the pure pleasure of it as well as her patterns.

Recently retired from custom-making tutus at 70, Dani found fluid art. A freeing moment, the polar opposite of the controlled, precise, detailed work of her past, the movement and unpredictability of the paints on the canvas drew her in. Still requiring her attention to detail in creating the mixes and her eye for colour in her choice of paints, the action of pouring and allowing the paints to each have its own space to create the unexpected and be a part of the final piece. Dani's manipulation and variation of each of the paintings through masking, highlighting and more advanced techniques to create her final pieces shows that she is yet to completely let go of the details, but at 70 somethings will never change.

This exhibition is the culmination of a lifetime exploring creative possibilities, Dani's love of colour and her exploration of the relationship between movement, joy, fluidity and their unexpected synergies. Dani's hope is that her paintings like her tutu's and sculptures before them brings joy and colour to anyone who comes across them.

APRIL 20 - MAY 22, 2023

Pete aims to exaggerate his models features just enough that his work sits right on the border of realistic and illustrative genres. It is a fine line as a little too far and his work would seem cartoonish and not quite enough and it looks like he hasn’t capture realistic, but when he invites thee viewers to consider the exaggerated features in the work and there own feelings about difference. Inspired by Peter Howson’s graphic style while on a school trip when he was only 9 and always finding himself drawn to portraits, Pete uses these together to create moments that don’t quite exist. After moving from the Uk to Australia’s Bondi Beach with his wife, they decided a quite life was calling and moved to Euchuca where Pete spends his days in his studio creating friends and stories to share with the world.

Macedon Ranges in the Autumn is full of chilly nights in front of a fire, cup of hot chocolate or wine in hand while you delight in the smorgasbord board of delectable delights that can be found at our farmer’s markets and small makers in the region. Days are filled with exploring beautiful gardens and streetscapes full of swirling auburn leaves and autumn bulbs interspersed by visits to local artisans and shops and of course, a cup or two of warm coffee and a good feed at one of our outstanding restaurants. Autumn in the Macedon Ranges is a season worth celebrating and this group of artists has truly encapsulated all the colours, sights, and experiences of Autumn in this stunning exhibition open every day at The Old Auction House from March 30th to April 17th.

Flourish came about due to it’s myriad of wonderful definitions – to prosper, to thrive, to reach a height of development and let’s not forget, to make bold and sweeping gestures. From the feeling of needing connection and community, Macedon Ranges artists Fran, Shaz and Jenn came together to share friendship and support as they embraced being females in their fifties and explored how they could help each other Flourish. Each artist looked at what that meant to them and what that looked like in their medium. Fran embraced strength and vibrancy of the delicate flower, Sharyn sculpted strong powerful female figures conveying the extraordinary in the ordinary while Jenn found nature’s resilience and beauty in the dark unsuspecting corner.

Buttlejorrk was founded in 1976 by a group of potters wishing to share their knowledge and exhibit their work as a group. The groups name Buttlejorrk refers to the original name of an area around Sunbury and Diggers Rest. There are still some of the original members as well as artists who have joined in recent years.

The individual artists background and work is varied, encompassing both traditional and contemporary works and over the years the group has expanded to include a wider range of arts including painting, sculpture, jewellery, textiles, metalwork and woodwork.

We are hosting Sacred Heart College Kyneton’s VCE art exhibition once again this year. Their work is a example of overcoming the challenges of the last couple of years, and still coming out fighting for the rights of the next generation.

Each student has developed ideas and produced sophisticated artwork that they should be proud to present. Covering themes including feminist ideals, imaginary landscapes, doomsday, climate change, recovery and more, this exhibition highlights the ideologies of youth, that we all have the power to influence.

This body of work is ultimately a reflection of the sanctuary that my art practice provides me with. Having been painting for more than 35 years, Sanctuary incorporates my passions for expressive use of colour, abstract and geometric art with this recent exploration of architectural forms.

Sanctuary is what we all seek, in life or in death, we look for shelter. Shelter from within and shelter from without. We take refuge in the past, within our memories, in nature and in material objects, we grasp places, moments, emotions, spirituality, religion, to build feelings of security, safety, and nourishment. Also we take comfort in ideas, imagination, art.

This body of work emerged from exploring sanctuary across time and space, exposed, and stripped bare for what it is in the context of a world where security could no longer be taken for granted. Places of worship, tradition and ritual witnessed in my travels, Chinese and Indian temples and architecture, integrated with my own attachment and appreciation of the sanctuary of my home and memories

Kaleidoscope from the greek base of Kalos meaning beautiful and Eidos meaning form, is a celebration of movement and colour.

Ten artists show us what ‘beautiful form’ of colour means to them in this bright and eclectic show featuring a variety of styles and mediums including ceramics, acrylic, installation, weaving and watercolours.

Eve Sellars has a deep love for rural living and an affinity with the natural environment that is clear in all of her work. Eve’s work aims to take the viewer on a journey of simple memories; picnics with family, Sunday drives, and mornings in the garden.

Eve is a passionate and prolific artist whose energy and enthusiasm for Australian art is boundless. Her work has been a finalist in many art prizes, and is held in collections around Australia and overseas.

Working predominantly with oil paint on pure linen, using earthy tones and natural composition she makes it possible to bring the Australian bush into any room.

Places plays with form, shape and colour to encourage the viewer to consider if they can trust what they see. This paired with her textured translucence, achieved with her palette knife, gives the viewer the feeling they could be looking through a creased veil, obscuring truths and distorting facts to their viewer’s own bias.

These pieces are juxtaposed against landscapes in traditional colours, Liz has deliberately made these intensely textured to make the viewer question whether the landscape they are seeing is truly there or if its destruction has been covered up and the image doctored.

Presented in conjunction with the Macedon Ranges Autumn Festival “Before the Fall” celebrates the Autumn season with works from 12 Victorian artists.

With a diverse range of styles and mediums the artworks capture the whole Autumn season, from sweeping Autumnal landscapes, mixed media assemblages including natural objects, sculptural embroidery, photography exploring the changing leaves across the region, and abstracts with Autumn palettes.

The inspiration for Kitty Calvert's unique one-off sculptures, comes from a love of vintage and a desire to re-use and recycle unique pieces of discarded treasure, each piece of treasure being an individual memory carrying vessel. Evoking cherished memories of childhood and making new cool stuff out of old cool stuff.

We invite the viewer to reflect on the concept of waste in the world, of recycling that waste into a new form and the potential journey each individual piece has made to its final resting place inside the sculpture. In today's world where things are designed with obsolescence in mind, we find there is a hankering for things that last.

No two sculptures are the same, each unique piece speaks to the individual of many things. Our aim is that the sculptures give you fond memories of simpler times and transport you on your own magical journey of memory.

Each piece has been left in its original found state. The patina, paint, dents, scratches, bruises, "bed hair" and dirt are all part of the history of each piece that comes together in their studio at Gasworks Arts Park in Albert Park. Kitty's wish is to delight her audience with mischievous frivolity and quirky humour.

Despite men dominating the headlines in the art world, women are at the forefront of art, and Australia is no exception. The Mornington Peninsula in particular is home to many of Australia’s most notable female artists. This exhibition features a selection of strong, independent women from the Mornington Peninsula who are following their lead producing art that encompasses the spectrum of the human experience: life, love, loss, family, friendship, history, nature, religion, tradition, empowerment, hope and unity (not to mention “little acts of rebellion” that are vital in an industry that has long been dominated by the patriarchy).

‘One Step Further’ is a curated selection of artists who push the boundaries of contemporary-themed quilt making. Presented by Victoria Quilters Inc. this juried biennial exhibition of Contemporary Textile Artwork is open to all textile artists in Australia & New Zealand.

The displayed quilts demonstrate a wide range of techniques, fabrics, and innovative designs with each maker going ‘one step further’ in style, technique and presentation while retaining the essence of a quilt.

RANGES brings together five friends whose formative years were spent in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges, reflecting on how this distinctive landscape continues to shape their ways of seeing and making.

The aim of the exhibition is to contribute back to the vibrant cultural life of the Macedon Ranges and celebrate the place that shaped them, as well as the people who have supported them.

Prettier than Perfection celebrates the quiet beauty found in nature’s irregularities, where florals and flora reveal their true character through variation, fragility, and change. In an age of AI-generated imagery and perfectly retouched photographs, this exhibition pushes back against artificial flawlessness, reminding us that bent stems, weathered petals, and asymmetrical forms are not imperfections but moments of visual poetry. Through thoughtful observation and expressive interpretation, the artworks highlight how irregularity brings depth, honesty, and emotion to botanical subjects. Prettier than Perfection invites viewers to slow down, look closer, and reconnect with the raw, imperfect beauty that cannot be replicated or perfected by technology.
